1. FC Köln / contract extension

Dominic Maroh Extended into 2018

(I’m sure you don’t mind if I just lift your photo, do you 1. FC Köln? Vielen Dank!)

Over the last few years, we’ve grown to expect to see Dominic Maroh in the central defense.

With a shiny new contract extension, we can expect that tradition to continue.

“Dome belongs among the reliable pillars of our defensive grouping,” says coach Peter Stöger about the benefit of extending Maroh. “I know that I can always rely on him and am happy that he and his strengths will continue to belong to our team.”

See? Integral . . . and probably the best smile here.

Maroh’s original deal was set to expire this summer. With reports surfacing that Kevin Wimmer may be looking to move this summer and with Maroh putting in a notable performance in what was a largely forgettable match Wednesday against Stuttgart, securing the services of such a reliable contributor to the club over the last few years seems a prescient move.

The Slovenian national player arrived from 1. FC Nürnberg in the summer of 2012, leaving a tradition-steeped first-division club for another tradition-steeped club just relegated to the second divsion. He has played in 86 competitive matches for the FC since that summer. He was among the starting eleven in all but one match last season, missing only the season finale after the league title and promotion had long been secured. Paired with Wimmer, Maroh served as a cornerstone of Köln’s historically strong defense which surrendered just 18 goals in the 33 matches Maroh started.

“Since his transfer to the 1. FC Köln 2 ½ years ago, Dominic Maroh has become an integral part of the team,” says sporting director Jörg Schmadtke. “His worth and playing time alone speak clearly to the value he has established as an important personality in the team.”

Personality? Maroh has it in spades.

Maroh is among the more active players in the team when it comes to social media (though, that’s not saying much, to be honest). He posts semi-regularly to his Facebook page (which I expect you have now liked, if you hadn’t already).

It turns out he’s also pretty good at the FIFA video game . . . or he got carried by Timo Horn . . . hard to tell.

But, back to the real importance of ‘Dome’ sticking around a bit longer, the guy can play a bit of football, has shown a knack for staying healthy, and seems to fit in well with the city, club, and his teammates.

“From my first day, I have felt very comfortable in Köln and have since found myself at home. It is a huge honor for me to be able to play for the 1. FC Köln, and I am looking forward to the coming years,” says Maroh. “To be able to play both at RheinEnergieStadion and away, before our incomparable fans is a special motivation for me. I want to contribute my part toward the FC establishing itself in the Bundesliga.”
